An off-the-shelf blind leaves gaps at the edges — light gets in, and so does the cold coming off the glass. Measured to the opening, a cellular shade traps a layer of air against the window and cuts the draft you feel standing next to it.

UPGRADE · SIDE-TRACK BLACKOUT

Long northern daylight is hard on shift workers, babies, and anyone trying to nap — light leaks in around the edges of an ordinary blind. A side-track blackout system runs the blind inside slim aluminum channels that block the light at the edges, for near-total darkness when you need to sleep. It does double duty: those same channels seal the air gap around the window, which industry data say can push the insulation value of the opening to among the highest an interior shade can reach.
